Dams may break. Storms might surge. Rivers will likely overflow. Those living in low lying conditions are at greater risk for being overtaken by flood waters, which bring its own set of problems. Flood waters bring destruction, loss, damage, deterioration, and other lingering effects like contamination and disease. Predatory animals such as snakes also lurk in the waters. Yet, some people refuse to move from where they are – even though danger is imminent. Instead, they get swept up and are overtaken; unfortunately, some even die in that very spot.
It struck me that many people right now are drowning in murky waters. Some of it of our own making, and some through the making of others. There have been signs, warnings, and words from God, but some have stayed put – wallowing there – in low lying areas. We may not be able to see it with our human eyes, but many are being overtaken in the flood waters of addiction, depression, despair, grief, hopelessness, pride, and sin. But Isaiah 59:19 tells us that when the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of God will raise up a standard.
Let’s get to Higher Ground!
The Hymn by the same name goes:
I’m pressing on the upward way, New heights I’m gaining every day; Still praying as I’m onward bound, “Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”
While we should be humble in spirit and postures, our lives should not be overtaken with sin or despair. We pray without ceasing, while believing and trusting that our God will take us to higher heights and greater depths in Him. Therefore, we don’t have to live impoverished naturally or spiritually. Rather as the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 3:14: “We should press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God.” Our calling, no matter what it is, is not a low call, because the One who called us is not a low God. He is The Supreme God.
My heart has no desire to stay Where doubts arise and fears dismay; Tho’ some may dwell where these abound, my prayer, my aim, is higher ground.
The expression goes, “Birds of a feather flock together.” Why be grounded with chickens, if we were meant to soar with eagles? No matter what circumstances we may find ourselves in today – if we would just keep pressing and keep pushing, we will get to where God has for us to go. Isaiah 40:31 states: “Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not faint.”
I want to live above the world, Though Satan’s darts at me are hurled; For faith has caught the joyful sound, The sound of saints on higher ground.
The weapons will be formed, but we need to know they will not prosper if we remain in our proper positions. Ephesians 6:16 urges us to: “Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”
I want to scale the utmost height and catch a gleam of glory bright; But still I’ll pray till heaven I’ve found, “Lord, lead me on to higher ground.”
Psalm 61:1-2: “Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of earth, I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”
Lord, lift me up and let me stand. By faith on heaven’s table land; A higher plane than I have found, Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
Each of us can come up some more. We can live better and be better than we currently are. Lord, lift us up to higher ground! Be blessed.
